FPV Drone Wholesale Pricing Explained: MOQ, Price Tiers, Lead Times and Sample Policy
Request wholesale quotes from five suppliers and you'll get five prices that don't seem to describe the same product. This guide explains the mechanics behind FPV component and drone pricing from the factory floor β so you can read a quotation the way the supplier wrote it.
Why the same motor quotes $14 and $28
We produce the Storm 2306.5 motor in-house, and we watch this happen constantly. The price gap between two "identical" quotations comes from five places:
- Magnet and bearing grade. N52 arc magnets vs cheaper blends; genuine bearings vs generic ones. The spec sheet says "N52" either way.
- Testing depth. Motors spin-tested per unit (ours) vs visually inspected per batch. The per-unit test adds cost and removes dead-on-arrival units from your customers' hands.
- Copper winding and shaft material. Titanium-alloy hollow shafts and high strand-count windings cost more than steel shafts and thick single-strand windings that sound identical in a listing.
- Who's quoting. Factory, sub-distributor, or reseller posing as both. Each layer adds margin without adding capability.
- What's excluded. Prop nuts, screws, packaging, warranty β some quotes are board-only.
How MOQ tiers actually map to discounts
A realistic ladder for stocked FPV components, expressed against our own published prices:
| Volume | Typical discount vs retail | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 10β49 pcs | 10β20% off | "Sampler" tier β usually wholesale minimum for mixed SKUs |
| 50β99 pcs | 20β30% off | First real OEM tier (logo silkscreen feasible from here) |
| 100β499 pcs | 30β40% off | Custom packaging amortizes; firmware pre-loads feasible |
| 500+ pcs | 40%+ off | Production scheduling priority; ODM conversations start here |
Two things to check before comparing tiers across suppliers: what the base is (a 40% discount off an inflated "retail" is a 10% discount off a real one) and whether testing is included at that tier.
Lead times: honest numbers
Published lead times for FPV hardware are usually honest but conditional. What actually drives the clock:
- Stocked SKUs, standard config: 7β15 days including QC and packing is realistic. Our stocked Factory Direct parts (FC, ESC, motors, VTX, RX, cameras) fall here.
- Logo + custom packaging: add 5β10 days for packaging tooling and printing, mostly sequential with production.
- Custom firmware defaults or pre-bound receivers: add 2β4 days if the config is agreed upfront. The killer is iterating the config during production.
- True ODM (custom PCB): 45β60 days from schematic sign-off. Anything quoted faster hasn't included the PCB fab queue.
- Peak seasons: Chinese New Year and the SeptemberβOctober export rush add 1β3 weeks everywhere. Plan orders around them.
Sample policy: what "samples credited" should mean
The standard structure, and the one we use:
- Samples are paid at retail price β free samples from a factory you've never bought from should make you ask who's paying for their QC.
- Samples ship in 3β5 days, with the same QC and paperwork as bulk units.
- When you place a bulk order above MOQ, 100% of the sample cost is credited against that order.
- The credit is per product line and usually valid for 60β90 days.
If a supplier offers free samples but no per-unit QC documentation, you're the one being sampled.
Payment terms and what's negotiable
- First order: expect 30β50% deposit, balance before shipment. That's normal; it's not a red flag.
- Established relationships: net terms and lower deposits follow a track record, not a first email.
- Trade assurance or escrow is available from most suppliers for first orders and worth the fees.
- Incoterms: EXW vs FOB vs DDP changes the total by 10β20% on small orders. Always compare quotes on the same term β DDP looks expensive per unit and is often cheaper all-in for sub-$2000 shipments to the EU/US.
Frequently asked
Can I mix SKUs to reach MOQ?
Usually yes for the logo tier (mixed lines are fine), but per-SKU minimums still apply for custom packaging β a box design only makes sense at 100+ units of that one SKU.
Is a lower per-unit price with no QC data ever worth it?
For throwaway builds, maybe. For anything with your brand on the box, no β one DOA batch costs you more in returns and reviews than the saving.
Do prices include shipping?
Almost never. Compare FOB vs FOB, DDP vs DDP. For EU-bound small orders, DDP avoids the customs handling that kills margin on "cheap" EXW quotes.
How do I get a quote?
Send product line, target quantity and customization level β our OEM form collects exactly that. Expect a reply with tier pricing and lead times within 24 hours.
Want factory-direct pricing on the table?
Tell us the product line and quantity β we'll reply with tier pricing, sample policy and lead time. No "contact us for a conversation" games.
